The internationally renowned tradition of Diner en Blanc has captured Vancouver’s social scene yet once again. Lucky invitees of Vancouver casting a ‘Sea of White’, illuminated various locations throughout the city, dressed to impress from head to toe in gleaming white chic ensembles, awaiting their ‘pumpkin carriages’.. I mean very large shuttles to whisk them away to the highest-kept-secret Vancouver location for their annual en blanc event.
Secret locations for Diner en Blanc Vancouver past have been Canada Place, Science World and the Olympic Cauldron at the Vancouver Convention Centre, and tonight’s secret location is our very own Concord Pacific Place. White table coverings, white chairs, silver, gold, and white balloons, along with candles galore and sparklers lighting up the sky in this magical soiree.

The tradition began in Paris 28 years ago when Diner en Blanc founder François Pasquier hosted an intimate dinner and asked his guests to wear white, and the tradition has held and grown ever since, capturing cosmopolitan cities around the world that wish to emulate a little bit of Paris one night a year.

Vancouver’s VIP guest list of 6000 pay homage to Paris donning elegant white from chiffon evening gowns to pure white sundresses, from Dolce and Gabanna suits, to white gloves, netting and feather fascinators (a formal royal hat) and the fellows in bow ties and cumberbunds toasting sparkling Champaign in their fine crystal glasses on this once a year occasion. It’s a flash set up with guests bringing everything from their own tables, to the food and cutlery. And everything must be white. Those are the rules.
As I hear the party winding down from my living room, the music and celebration that is bringing the neighbourhood alive, allows us non-invitees to enjoy a bit of the excitement vicariously through the guests. Hmmm… it is ironic however that this fancy gathering just so happened to fall on my birthday… and to think I wasn’t even invited!
I do believe though that they are looking for new ‘leaders’ to join their wait list, and the selected few will be given the privelege to bring up to 5 guests. So if you are wanting a taste of magical fairytale romanticism right here in Vancouver in 2017, you can find more information at Diner en Blanc – Vancouver
And who knows…maybe one year I may even see you there myself!
